Held various positions as follows: Chairman & Chief Executive, PETRONAS (1976-1978); Chief Secretary, Government of Malaysia (1970-1976); Chief of Civil Affairs, National Operations Council (1969); Director General, Public Service Department (1967-1969); Secretary for Defence (1962-1967); Deputy Secretary for Defence (1960-1962); Principal Assistant Secretary at Cabinet (1957-1958); Attachment at War Office, London (1956-1957); Joint Secretary of Malayan Independance Mission (Merdeka Mission, 1956); Asst. Secretary/Principal Asst. Secretary for Defence ((1955); Assistant State Secretary, Pahang State Govt. (1952-1955); Malay Assistant Superintendent, Postal Dept. (1948); Malay Probationer (1939). Was awarded two prestigious scholarships: Queen's Scholarship to read law in United Kingdom, & Fullbright Exchange Scholarship to Yale University, U.S.A. Also attended course at Imperial Defence College, London.
