Men and women of the Tun Razak
generation, be they in the Judiciary, Civil Service, the Police, the Military,
the professional services and the universities were a special breed of
Malaysians. They were apolitical, independent, very professional and extremely
competent. They had integrity and the courage to speak up to their political
masters whenever it was appropriate to do so.
The government then functioned so
effectively that it did not matter whether the politicians were around or not.
Because who they were, they were respected by their counterparts in the region
for their proficiency in the use of English language, and their skills in the
drafting of joint communiques and treaties.
In the Civil Service of the Tun
Razak, we had (Tun) Ghazalie Shafie, (Tan Sri) Kadir Shamsuddin, (Tun) Raja
Mohar, (Tun) Abdullah Salleh, (Tan Sri) Jamil Rais, Mayor Yaccob Latiff, (Tan Sri) Shariff, (Tan Sri) Hashim Aman,to name but a few. In
the Police we had (Tun) Salleh, (Tan Sri) Rahman Hashim, and the rising star
(Tun) Hanif Omar; in the military we had (Tun) General Ibrahim Ismail, and his
team of outstanding Generals and hot shot colonels and in the legal services we
had (Tun) Suffian Hashim, (Tun) Raja Azlan Shah and a team of judges including
(Tun) Salleh Abas, and at Bank Negara we had (Tun) Ismail Mohamed Ali and his
battle hardened team of economists and central bank officers.
It was golden age of the public
service and to his great credit, Tun Razak, himself an outstanding, hard
working and dedicated leader, could manage and empower these outstanding
personalities
